海軍てぬぐい　雋吉文字あそび

 
海軍艦艇の艦尾には、能書家であった海軍中将伊藤雋吉（1840-1921）の手によるいろは四十八文字で艦名を記しており、海上自衛隊にも継承されています。この特徴ある雋吉文字に、通信の際、字の聞き違いを防ぐために使われた海軍の通話表を組み合わせ図案化しました。
 
 
TENUGUI featuring with Imperial  Japanese  Navy “PLAY WITH ITO TOSHIYOSHI CHARACTERS”
 
On the stern of the Imperial Japanese Navy ships, the name of the ship was inscribed by Hiragana. It was 48 characters by the Navy Vice-Admiral Ito Toshiyoshi who was also a skilled calligrapher, and this has been inherited by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. This towel was designed by combining the Toshiyoshi characters, which are unique, and the phonetic code, which was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy to prevent mishearing of the character during communication over radio.
